How to Deal With the Stress of a Sudden Change in Circumstances: Switching to the Other Side of Our Duality

Recently, I had to leave my current house until the end of next month. Since it was too sudden and unexpected, I felt a lot of stress. However, I finally calmed down and came to feel a little joy. Today, I will introduce how I dealt with the stress of a sudden change in circumstances.

How to deal with stress that is forced to change

Sometimes, we want to deal with stress, especially when something forces us to do unwanted things. Our parents or bosses might insist that we should act to follow their values.

If we are empathic and creative, we would be resilient to material shortages but tend to be vulnerable to human stress. We often cannot resist it because we are not good at arguing. That makes us want to manage our lives independently rather than change others.

Although we might feel like we have been kicked out of society, it is a natural phenomenon. Society is for the majority. On the other hand, empathic and creative people are the minority. Perhaps that is why empathic and creative people are often too stressed about doing unwanted things.

In other words, we have to change something to adapt to the sudden change in circumstances. Otherwise, we have no choice but to be more patient and suffer.

However, we sometimes don’t know how to deal with it. That makes us continue to try to be patient.

Today, I will introduce a way to deal with such a situation through my recent experience. Focusing on the other side of our duality could show us how to adapt to the new situation. This knowledge might allow us to calm down, reduce stress, and even enjoy the situation.

Switching duality to adapt to situations

First, let me explain our mental duality. We have a mental duality that allows us to adapt to many situations.

For example, we could have positive and negative attitudes. We become energetic to achieve our goals by being positive. However, after being active for a while, we want a break. Stopping proceeding is negative from the perspective of being active.

Although they are contradictory, both are similarly important because we cannot live on one side alone. If we try to keep only acting, we will be exhausted. If we continue to sleep, it is similar to death.

Our duality allows us to adapt to a fluctuating environment. Sometimes, the environment changes and affects us. We may be more active in the summer, but we may want to rest more in the winter.

That is why we have mental duality. Balancing them allows us to adapt to environmental fluctuations.

My case of switching my duality

This tells us that we can intentionally switch the aspect of our duality. That allows us to adapt to a new situation.

In my case, I switched my aspect of duality from creating stability to reforming my fundamentals. This allowed me to adapt to my new situation.

I was recently forced to change my way of life. I had to leave my current house until the end of next month, as mentioned above.

That shocked me because I had tried to create a stable life in the current house as well as possible. On the other hand, leaving my house is neither a peaceful nor a stable event. That made me depressed because my many preparations had been wasted.

Finding what aspects we have to change

In such a case, try finding what aspects we have to shift. We always have two contradictory approaches to life. In other words, we can live in two ways while keeping the direction of our lives.

In my case, my direction in life was to be independent. To realize this, I had two approaches: creating stability and reforming my fundamentals.

They are contradictory because creating stability prevents reforming my fundamentals, and vice versa.

After feeling enough depression, I changed my mental aspect. I felt, “The creating stability phase is over; now is a time to reform my fundamentals.”

Flexible switching our aspects

That made me calm down and relaxed. I let go of the lifestyle to create stability and focused on reforming. I decided to reduce unnecessary large items and secure mobility instead of adding fixed useful things. That allowed me to dispose of my old preparations that were no longer needed.

Now, I value mobility more than items. This switch reduced the stress of my current situation. Moreover, I am starting to enjoy this situation. Although too much stress exhausts us, moderate stress can be enjoyed.

If I had stuck to the lifestyle to create stability, I would have felt more stress because my approach didn’t fit the situation.

Although we are one individual, we have two contradictory approaches to living. Being unaware of duality and inflexible enough to change our approaches causes stress.

Conclusion

That is a way to deal with such a situation through my recent experience.

We can switch the other side of our duality. That could show us how to use the new situation.

This knowledge might allow us to calm down, reduce stress, and even enjoy the situation.
