A week ago, I helped my brother at his pastry shop. In his shop, enormous workloads caused deep confusion. That experience showed that I could willingly improve his environment. Let’s talk about it.
Where to show our uniqueness
Sometimes, we want to know our potential. Demonstrating our uniqueness enables us to contribute to others. That fulfills us.
One example of our distinctiveness is logical ability. We can think reasonably.
However, we sometimes don’t know how to use it efficiently.
One approach is to enter a chaotic environment intentionally. That might show you where to contribute. Today, I will explain it with my example.
The chaos in my brother’s shop
A place where people are confused would provide us with opportunities to show our logical sense. It may occur more often in businesses facing labor shortages or relying on outdated methods.
To make it easier to understand, let’s look at my example.
When I helped at my brother’s pastry shop, I realized its fundamental problem: it was chaotic. There was no integrated production plan.
For example, they were so busy restocking their products. Every time a new order came in and a specific cake sold out, they had to bake it quickly. The products are disappearing one after another. Although it was fantastic in terms of having many customers, it was an exhausting situation from the perspective of a labor shortage.
In such fields, it seemed finding enough workers was difficult. In my brother’s case, even when he finally hired a person months ago, she quit only after three days. It means that hiring someone is extremely competitive. They had to seek another solution.
Although less logical people are good at repeating the same tasks, they are unskilled at improving processes. They gradually became driven by enormous orders and worked long hours, which could damage their health. My brother and his wife, who also helps my brother at his shop, ate the same simple soup every dinner. Since they had no time to cook, their diet was poor.
They also had no time to organize things. His warehouse was messy. They seemed not to know where to improve. All they could do was endure it.
I realized that was the normal situation in industries facing labor shortages.
A fantastic place to play
We can naturally show our talents in such a situation.
In my case, his shop was a fantastic playground.
For example, I could not help but organize the warehouse. I wanted to make a list of items and organize them neatly. I love such work.
I also wanted to clean up. Since the staff restroom was particularly dirty, I willingly asked if I could clean it on my first day of help. It was a rewarding task.
Then, I felt that I could simplify their work processes. Making a baking plan based on the situation would make things more efficient. I realized that there is much room for improvement.
Even if I could not do everything, they would be happy just with help for their meals.
Although there are differences in the level and kind of improvement, they all interested me. The more chaotic the place was, the more excited it made me. That was why I wanted to help him even without a salary. It was an entertaining hobby for me.
I realized that logical people can show their talents in such places. A place that is unpleasant for ordinary people can become our best place.
