View From 30 Meters Away: How to Design a Product Appearance

Yesterday, I started to create ordered bags and am designing them. Since they are large tote bags with long handles, appearance also becomes important.

However, aesthetics was one of the things I am not good at.

That made me consider how to design appearances well. Let’s talk about it.

How to create attractive product designs

Sometimes, we want to create attractive product designs.

Exterior design is one factor that affects its quality. Although we might often prefer functionality to appearance, the impressions of others are useful in social activities.

In a social place, people tend to trust those who can make the right impression according to the purpose of the gathering. In other words, appearance is one of the communication tools. People consider those with an appropriate appearance as the ones who are reliable.

The same goes for our products. Appropriate exterior design enhances the product’s reliability.

That is why it is essential to design the appearance effectively, especially when our products target socially active people.

However, we sometimes don’t know how to design appearances well.

One solution is to have a perspective of viewing our product from a distance of 30 meters. This concept may improve the appearance of your products. Today, I will explain why.

View from 30 meters away

Try looking at the product you are currently creating from 30 meters away. That perspective can show you where to improve.

Design is the overall appearance seen from a distance. Although we tend to focus on only details, we have to first watch it from afar. Customers don’t immediately look at the details. They first observe the whole, which includes environments. Then, they focus on the things that interest them.

It means that if the design is clear, customers can tolerate minor flaws in the details.

However, the reverse is not true. If our products lack appropriate design, users become intolerant of small problems. In other words, the absence of solid design makes customers focus on only the details and imperfections.

Distinctive design even from a distance

I recently realized this perspective. When I researched various patchwork designs of bags, I noticed a tendency. Top designers often organized bag surfaces into only one to three distinct sections. Even if the bag has patchwork with various fabrics, it appears to have at most three large sections brought about by contrast. It was distinctive.

On the other hand, amateur works lacked a distinctive design from a distance, although they were detailed when seen up close. In other words, they didn’t leave impressions from a distance.

That changed my perspective on design. I have come to focus on vague surfaces before specific lines or curves.

It is like a national flag. National flags are designed to be recognized from a distance.

Many people believe that design is something detailed. Professional designers are those who adjust things precisely to the millimeter.

However, that is a misconception. Design is to realize an appropriate appearance according to the situation. In the case of bags, a view from 30 meters shows us a reasonable shape and colors. That allows us to realize an attractive visual aspect.

The same goes for functionality. Watching its features from afar first gives us a reasonable design that impresses others.

Conclusion

That is how we can create attractive product designs.

A perspective of viewing our product from a distance of 30 meters can help us. You can change the distance according to your product.

This concept might improve the appearance of your products.
