How to Increase Our Ability to Influence

I finally moved to my parents’ house yesterday. Although my packages have not arrived yet, I have started a new life.

After returning to this house for the first time in a week, I noticed that the cluttered rooms had been well-organized. My parents tidied them up.

That made me think about our ability to influence. Let’s talk about it.

How to affect others

Sometimes, we want to enhance our ability to influence.

Influence means making others progress on their own will. We don’t have to force them to follow our values. Although we live naturally, they imitate our ways of life. It is a peaceful way to change others.

In addition, it often provides us with abundance. A typical example is business. Influence promotes the sales of our products.

However, we sometimes don’t know how to affect others without complimenting our values directly.

A logical life might allow you to be more influential. Today, I will explain why with my recent example.

My example of affecting others

If we live logically, we naturally show the talents of influence. In other words, we don’t have to demand that others follow our ways if we always think rationally.

To understand it more easily, let’s look at my example.

Two months ago, I started to stay at my parents’ house. At that time, many rooms were messy with fabrics. Since they made money by sewing after their retirement, they had a lot of unsorted fabric materials. Even in the dining and living room, the used cloth was piled up high.

The above photo is one of the scattered rooms I took last month.

They didn’t like tidying up. To be precise, they didn’t care about organizing. It meant that they thought it was efficient for them not to sort.

On the other hand, I like organized and tidy rooms. I started to clean not only my room but also several places I always use, such as around my dining chair and the entrance. These places always became clean and neat.

Using the consistency of humans

Humans have consistency. If a clean spot appears in the house, eventually either that area will get cluttered or the entire house will become tidy.

At first, my parents did the latter, consistent in a mess. They placed fabric and a sewing machine on my clean area. It is efficient to put things in an empty place.

However, I kept my place organized and clean. Since I also used the sewing machines and fabrics on the dining table, I decluttered every time I used them.

Interestingly, a few weeks later, they started to organize the fabrics in the house. Since they often used my dining chair to sew, they realized the convenience of having organized areas at home.

At first, it was just a small area on a dining table. Until then, we had been eating at the table with unnecessary items. However, now there is nothing on the table except for dishes during mealtime. Then, they started to organize the living room table.

The space for tidying up gradually expanded.

In other words, they have become consistent in organized rooms.

The mechanism of influence

That made them determined to tidy up the house. That was two weeks ago.

Then, I spent about a week going back to my previous apartment to move.

After I returned yesterday, I was surprised. All the rooms were decluttered. They sorted out and disposed of unnecessary fabrics and clothes. The messy rooms had become neat.

The following photo is the one I took today. It is the same room as shown above. You can see that the level of organization has improved significantly.

I didn’t ask them to clean up. They did it of their own will.

That told me the mechanism of influence in society. People have consistency. At first, they continue their custom, even if there is a more effective method. They often ruin good things at the first stage. However, if they continue to experience an effective state, they will naturally try to be efficient permanently.

That is the process of influence. Don’t get discouraged just because others don’t apply your suggestions the first time. Non-logical people frequently choose their habits. However, after they continuously experience convenience, they begin to choose the more rational option.

Continue to choose a rational way of life. That makes us efficient parts of society. It is like the clean spots in my house. A small, efficient spot will change the whole society.

Conclusion

This illustrates the capacity to influence others.

Humans have consistency.

If we continuously decide rationally, we naturally show the talent of influence.

This logic might allow you to be more influential.
