Understanding the Whole Situation Objectively and in Detail: The First Step of Improvement

Since I will go to my brother’s pastry shop to help him, let’s talk about how I started improving the shop’s management environment last week.

My frustration toward my brother

Since last week, I have started improving my brother’s shop.

The first thing I tackled was organizing cluttered items. I helped bake cakes from the morning until around 3 PM, and then I started tidying up in the short time afterwards.

At first, I didn’t know how to resolve that confusion. All things seemed chaotic.

Ring-shaped tools: I still don’t know how to use them.

The only thing I realized was my frustration with my brother. He was trying to process everything in his head without writing down the necessary tasks. His attitude prevented him from organizing his various tasks.

Although I wanted to point it out to him, I felt hesitant to say something that would deny his management so suddenly. When there was a 5-year age difference in childhood, it was engraved in my soul that I could not anger my brother. It was like a reflex.

That made me consider another rational approach.

My first step in improving his shop

Then, I realized I had been thinking only in my head without writing anything down. That caused my confusion. In other words, my frustration toward my brother should have been directed at myself.

That showed me one approach: I would write things down and solve my problems.

As the first step, I tried to map where the tools and supplies were. That showed me I had no idea how the shop was organized.

That was why I pictured the shop layout and checked each shelf and box one by one during my spare time. Then, unnecessary areas and items became understandable.

Many ribbons: I doubt if they need that many types.

In other words, recognizing the situation objectively and in detail showed me the solution.

I learned that both the big picture and the details are necessary to improve; one alone is not enough.

Interestingly, after that, I immediately achieved a clear improvement, which made my brother and his wife glad. I will explain that experience in a later article.

Conclusion

Anyway, I have gradually come to understand how to help others improve.

I will try it today as well.

Everything is a new experience, and I am enjoying it.

Thank you for reading this article. I hope to see you in the next one.

The reward last time: a defective chocolate cake! It was sweet, rich, and delicious. I came to love ganache.
