Introducing Strange Tools and Ingredients at the Pastry Shop

Since I will go to my brother’s pastry shop and help him, I will introduce four strange goods in his shop briefly today.

A rice scraper

The first item was a rice scraper. The staff members in his factory often used an East Asian tool to make Western-style pastries.

Scooping buttercream

They said it was a versatile tool. When I used it, I broke apart and scooped up the chilled, hardened buttercream. Since steel scrapers damaged the plastic container, a plastic rice scraper was suitable.

It seemed it could also be useful to scoop up various half-solid and half-liquid things. It made sense.

A copper bowl

The second item was a copper bowl, as shown in the following photo.

The ingredients of custard: they used real vanilla, which is on the cutting board in the upper left

Cooking tools made from copper are rare.

I used it to hold milk while preparing ingredients for custard. Since a copper bowl conducts heat easily, it is easy to adjust the temperature. Perhaps they made custard while warming the milk with it, although I didn’t watch the whole process.

Copper pots might be used for things that require delicate temperature control.

A fiberglass parchment sheet

The third item was a fiberglass parchment sheet. It is shown in the following photo.

The fiberglass parchment sheet. I was removing the remaining hardened sugar after baking.

Unlike regular cooking sheets, it can be used multiple times. However, it cannot be bent. Since it was made from glass, if we bend it too much, it will break.

Since I didn’t know the fact, and it felt like an ordinary plastic sheet, I tried to fold it naturally at first. My brother hurriedly stopped me. It may be a common mistake that a beginner makes.

Vanilla sugar

The last curious item was vanilla sugar. As the name suggests, it is a sugar mixed with vanilla.

The vanilla sugar, which was used for cookies.

It smelled so nice! When I smelled it, it appeared delicious and attractive, even if it was just sugar. I first learned the power of smell.

Since cookie ingredients don’t contain liquidity, vanilla essence or oil will not mix evenly. In addition, they avoided artificial flavors as much as possible. That may be why they use vanilla sugar, which is made from real vanilla.

Conclusion

Anyway, they were the strange, curious items I found at my brother’s cake factory.

I will enjoy learning to bake cakes and considering how to improve the process.

Thank you for reading this article. I hope to see you in the next one.

The reward of last weekend: the edges of sponge cakes and pound cakes. Although it appeared bad, it tasted great.
