How to Stay Calm and Rational When You Fear the Future May Worsen

When we are in the midst of change, many unexpected things upset our minds. Although it is proof of being in a change, we cannot be at ease until we judge it rationally. Let’s talk about it.

How to stay calm

Sometimes, we want to stay calm even when our emotions disturb us.

A typical example is when we fear the future may worsen. We see signs that the future may be getting worse, such as symptoms of poor health, losing something valuable, and declining in one of our aspects, and that unsettles us.

That is why we want to solve such mental upsets.

However, we sometimes don’t know how to calm ourselves down.

One solution is to remind ourselves that we don’t know what the future holds. That might settle you down. Today, I will explain why.

We don’t know what the future holds

When you fear the future may worsen and want to calm down, try reminding yourself that you don’t know what the future holds.

There are always the unexpected, for better or worse. We never know if our current judgments are correct in the long run. If our decisions were all correct, we would already be billionaires. There are also times when negative outcomes turn out to be beneficial in the long run. That tells us we have to doubt our beliefs.

If we refrain from assuming what is wrong, we can keep that option available. Having multiple options allows us to make rational judgments.

In other words, the lack of options brings us endless emotional worries.

Keeping the option to follow the times

For example, suppose the world economy has suddenly started to decline. It is easily foreseeable that jobs and income will decrease, people will begin to conflict, and the world will become gloomy.

If we assume that it is a bad future, we have no choice. We understand that we cannot change the direction of the economy as individuals. In addition, we have no interest in social activities. The lack of options like that makes us anxious.

On the other hand, if we don’t assume it is good or bad, we can keep that option available to us. We can choose our behavior from the following options:

  • We deny the direction of the times and try to correct the era.
  • We follow the direction of the times, take advantage of it, and try to make a profit.

The latter option relaxes us. It seems it is more reasonable for us. We can identify long-term economic cycles and make profits even from the stock market collapse.

In other words, try following the ‘bad future’ when you continue to worry. Rationally speaking, there are always unexpected opportunities and joys in such a direction.

That will make you calm and judge rationally.

Conclusion

That is a way to stay calm and rational when we fear the future may worsen.

Since we don’t know what the future holds, we can try following the ‘bad future.’

Rationally speaking, there are always unexpected opportunities and joys in that direction.

That decision might settle you down.
