To Wait Until I Feel Motivated: What I Really Wanted to Do When I Was Reluctant

I started living with my parents weeks ago, and yesterday, I decided to change the address first before I cleaned up the things in the previous apartment.

That experience made me think about my motivation. Let’s talk about it.

How to be motivated

Sometimes, we want motivation. It makes us energetic.

However, there are times when we cannot obtain it, no matter how hard we try.

That often makes us struggle with motivation.

Recently, I realized why such a phenomenon happens. I misunderstood what I wanted. Today, I will introduce my experience. It might help you improve your life without struggle.

Two aspects of judgment

What I wanted when I had no motivation was simple: to wait until I felt motivated.

In other words, I wanted relaxation rather than motivation. I wanted to do everything calmly without tensing my body.

We have two aspects of judgment, as follows:

  • Empathic judgment makes us want to focus on a single task and goal energetically. In this state, we dislike ambiguous things and want to make things clear.
  • Logical judgment makes us want more relaxation and efficiency. We recognize everything as a part of chaos. That enables us to tolerate ambiguous things and stop overthinking.

When we have intense empathy and are reluctant to do anything, it is better to judge by the latter, logical decision.

A single goal vs. chaos

Empathy makes us want to focus on a single goal and eliminate unnecessary distractions.

The strong imagination towards ideals gives us energy. Other values make our beliefs unstable.

It means that an unwavering inner image builds our confidence. That is why we want to clear things up when we are overly empathic.

On the other hand, logical sense allows us to accept the ambiguity. Chaotic situations calm us because we are free from a specific goal.

Rationally speaking, we don’t understand reality well. We don’t know what improves our lives. We can either continue or stop doing one thing.

In such a situation, we don’t have to pursue one aspect of values. That relaxes us and makes us interested in new things.

My case

In my case, right after I started living with my parents, I was eager to decide about my future as quickly as possible. I wanted to cancel my previous apartment immediately and move all of my stuff out to the current house completely.

My intense empathy made me feel that way. I felt uncomfortable with the ambiguity towards my way of life.

However, my rationality told me, “What is the benefit of solving everything so hastily? I don’t know reality enough. It includes the meaning of life. However, one thing is certain: I want to relax now. I am in such a mood. It is unreasonable to resolve all ambiguous matters in life just to be at ease. That will cost decades, and I don’t have to spend such a long time. Instead, relax right now. It is the rational way.”

That allowed me to tolerate ambiguous things and stop judging impulsively.

Then, after weeks, I realized that I could change only the address first. Since that is easy to apply, I could do it as part of relaxing. I also noticed that I can make every moving task more efficient.

That motivated me. I wanted relaxation and made the moving tasks part of it. Although they could not be finished immediately, it allowed me to handle them efficiently without unnecessary stress.

That was the rational way I wanted. Waiting and relaxing gave me motivation.

Conclusion

That was my experience that told me what I want. I wanted to wait until I felt motivated.

In other words, I wanted relaxation and rationality. Although they cannot finish things immediately, it allows us to handle our tasks efficiently without unnecessary stress.

This logic might help you improve your life without struggle.
