Intentional Decline: How to Grow Up Rationally

After I started living rationally, I stopped creating digital products and began sewing bags. Although it didn’t interest me at the beginning, it gradually fascinated me.

That told me how to grow up rationally. Let’s talk about it.

How to break through stagnation

Sometimes, we want to break through hardship or stagnation in the long term.

When there is no hope, we struggle to discover an opportunity in familiar things. For example, we might try to identify valuable skills and experiences we have learned. We might try to discover a new curiosity. We might try to find our unique talents and use them efficiently. We believe those special things will give us a breakthrough.

However, they often don’t work. That despairs us.

That makes us want to know another perspective.

One solution is to be natural instead of sticking to the current values. That can provide you with another aspect of growth. Today, I will explain why.

Two approaches to progression

If you want to grow, try being natural instead of sticking to the current values. It means that when we are stagnant, we need to stop searching for something special.

Stagnation arises from the limitations of our interests. There is no new potential for development, so we lose interest. It is inefficient to continue to search for something in the place where it has already become scarce.

In other words, we have two approaches to breakthrough based on the situation. They are as follows:

  • Considering what we can use: This approach works when the surrounding circumstances change. We can find answers within ourselves.
  • Considering which path is natural and rational to follow: This approach works well when the surrounding circumstances are stable. We can find answers in areas outside ourselves that we have been indifferent to.

When we are stagnant, the latter would work.

What does being natural mean?

Being natural has the power to break through the limits. It tells us that it is time to start to decline intentionally.

It is like a wave. If a wave reached the limit, it is natural to decay. That process is the breakthrough. In other words, don’t stick to being at the peak level. That gives you progression.

Many misunderstand it, including myself in the past. We believe maintaining the peak level is growing. However, such a belief is unnatural. Even if it goes for a while, it will suddenly collapse when it stops working.

Similarly, nature doesn’t guarantee that happy things will always happen after terrible events. The people who we hate don’t necessarily become unhappy. These beliefs are unnatural.

That is one of the laws of nature. We cannot escape it. That is why many arrogant people suddenly decline. Unnatural distortion will eventually make sense in the long run.

Why does decline lead to growth?

The opposite case will also become true. Those with talent will be in a state of being respected, no matter how humble and low-profile they try to be. Even if we try to decline the rising wave, rationality connects it to growth.

We have multiple aspects. Riding the upper waves, like surfing, and going down the stream of the waves, like sailing—both of them are appreciated. Above and below are just relative terms. From others’ perspectives or in another situation, the bottom can become the top.

In my case, succeeding in digital creation is one aspect of accomplishment. On the other hand, giving it up is also a success because I can change my life. Living various ways of life is also one of the attractions.

Nature brings people to a natural outcome. It is beyond our efforts. We don’t have to worry and be obsessed with both success and failure.

We should look at the natural flow. It requires a long-term, historical perspective. We can predict a natural outcome of people’s current behavior and act naturally based on our rationality. That will make our lives easier.

Conclusion

That is why we can break through hardship by being natural instead of sticking to the current value.

Nature brings people to a natural outcome. We don’t have to worry and be obsessed with both success and failure.

That can provide you with another aspect of growth.
