Why Others’ Denial Doesn’t Hurt Us When We Are Rational

Recently, I have been enjoying a rational life. It calms me down. I intend to pursue this style until I sufficiently manage my intense empathy.

Yesterday, I made a discovery. Even if others deny my idea, it didn’t hurt me. Let’s talk about it.

How to overcome the fear of being denied

Sometimes, we wish to overcome the fear of having our ideas rejected. That makes us feel as if our existence is meaningless.

I have also had that fear for a long time. That made me start things without telling anyone. Although I still don’t intend to start a large-scale activity from the beginning, I tried to eliminate others’ values as much as possible. In other words, I didn’t want to be influenced by others.

However, I realized yesterday that I didn’t mind being denied my ideas. If we are rational, the objection against our ideas doesn’t trigger our emotions. Let’s explain why.

Two types of ideas

The ideas we come up with while we are relaxing are not hurt by rejection.

There are two types of ideas, as follows:

  • The ideas that come to us when we are energetic: Although they motivate us intensely, they get hurt when denied. Opposing opinions take away our energy.
  • The ideas that come to us when we are relaxed: Although they don’t drive us strongly, they are tough against rejection. We can enjoy opposing opinions as one aspect of possibility.

The former doesn’t require objections. This is because we have a certain goal and methods. We don’t want disagreement but support. That is why we often struggle with how to transform opposing opinions into energy.

On the other hand, the latter resembles a pleasant discussion. It is the process of finding a reasonable idea from various perspectives.

Since we are relaxed, we are not bound by a single fixed idea. Rather, it is enjoyable to dig into erratic ideas.

Enjoying the world of zombies

It is like an activity in which we assume a hypothetical world and entertain it.

For example, suppose that the people around us were turning into zombies one after another. It is an infectious disaster. How do we survive efficiently?

Although it looks like a strange premise, it is still interesting to discuss. We set various assumptions about the world and consider effective ways to survive.

In this style, opposing opinions based on possibility make it enjoyable.

The same goes for our reality.

For example, suppose we want money. However, we have strong constraints called individuality. We cannot live the same way as our surroundings. It means that we cannot survive if we judge based only on common sense.

In this case, outlandish opinions based on possibility make us hopeful. We can discover opportunities that we could not see until now. The more convincing the objections against our beliefs are, the more they give us pleasure.

In my case, I am currently learning sewing from my parents as a relaxation activity. Although they often dismiss my aesthetic sense, I don’t care. Since I can only understand functional beauty, my sense of beauty is always irrational and unconvincing. That allowed me to enjoy denying my ideas.

Relaxation provides us with such enjoyment. We don’t stick to usual methods, so we can flexibly try another opportunity. It is entertaining rather than hurtful.

Conclusion

That is why the ideas we come up with while we are relaxing are not hurt by rejection.

We can enjoy opposing opinions as one aspect of possibility.

This realization might allow you to enjoy considering strange premises.
