Think in Trilism: How to Strategically Solve Problems Based on Three Elements

I might finally come to understand how to deal with this confusing reality. Looking at things from different perspectives cleared my confusion. In my case, the dualism perspective freed me from fear of future changes. That is an example. An appropriate view angle makes it easier to deal with reality.

Today, I will talk about one of them: Trilism.

How to realize our wishes strategically

Sometimes, we want to realize our wishes strategically. We might have many desires, such as independence, a peaceful life, enough wealth, passion, or freedom.

However, we sometimes don’t have a concrete strategy. We lack many resources, such as time, money, energy, or skills. We have to secure them, even little by little.

We cannot get them without a concrete plan. Although thinking in dualism helps us balance our lives, it doesn’t provide specific strategies or tactics.

That is why we want to know how to obtain abundance strategically.

In such a case, a trilistic way of thinking can help. It gives us a strategic perspective on how to make our wishes happen. Today, I will introduce how to use it.

Perspectives on solving problems

Appropriate perspectives make it easier to solve problems. There are several approaches. They are as follows:

  • The monistic approach reduces the cause to only one. This is suitable for a level of problem to find a complete solution. We ask ourselves, ‘Why?’ This leads us to the perfect solution. However, this causes stagnation if there are many confusing factors.
  • The dualistic approach reduces the cause to two contradictory aspects. This is suitable for a level of problem concerning how to live. We ask ourselves, ‘Which to balance?’ This leads us to a reasonable solution. However, this approach is useless in social problems. This can only be used for one’s own way of life.
  • The trilistic approach reduces the cause to three. This is suitable for a level of social problem. We ask ourselves, ‘Which one is effective?’ This provides us with strategies. However, this approach doesn’t give us specific methods. We have to break down problems more specifically.
  • The tetralistic (or more) approach reduces the cause to four (or more). Examples are ‘When?’ or ‘Where?’ We can create concrete tactics with this approach.

The difference is simple: the more elements it has, the more specifically we can solve, although the monistic approach is special.

How to switch perspectives

In other words, if there is no absolute solution, we shift toward the downside (toward more elements).

Let me explain this more clearly. We can switch our perspective as follows (the monism side is at a high level.):

  • If you stagnate and feel something is fundamentally wrong, shift to a higher perspective (toward the monistic approach). If the monistic approach doesn’t work, try the dualistic approach.
  • If you stagnate and don’t know the specific method, switch to a lower perspective (toward more elements).

When you find an appropriate level, you will soon understand the cause. This allows you to balance your state.

This was surprising for me. We don’t have fear. We can sacrifice without hesitation. In other words, deciding with pain means not seeing reality from the right level.

In this article, I will explain how to think in trilism.

What is trilism?

Trilism is a framework to see things at a strategic level. This is effective when relative factors determine the outcome.

There could be no absolute solution, even if we use the dualistic perspective. The rock-paper-scissors relationship is an example. We have to change our response depending on which hand the opponent uses.

We can use this framework to analyze both ourselves and our problems. It tells us our strengths and weaknesses. This works well, especially for social problems.

Steps to analyze in trilism

You can use trilism in the same way as dualism. First, you pick up three contradictory aspects. Then, decide based on your mood. Balancing them would solve your problem.

However, trilism is useful for more concrete problems, like business or money. It can give us specific strategies.

Here is an example of how to analyze a profitable market:

  1. Determine the three main elements.
  2. Find which element you are strong in. This is your strength.
  3. Analyze the opponent you want to win. In this example, we analyze the market you belong to. Find which element it biases toward.
  4. Avoid entering the well-balanced market.
  5. Find the market that has a bias that your strengths work advantageously.
  6. You can also change your balance according to the market bias. This makes you advantageous.
  7. If you don’t get a good idea, go back to the first step and look at it from another angle.

Of course, this is one example. You can use this framework in various ways.

Example of three elements

Various angles determine three elements. Let me introduce examples below:

  • Management, production, sales
  • Top, middle, bottom
  • Abstract, concrete, moderate
  • Logic, image, mixture
  • First class, second class, bottom rank
  • Human resources, items, money
  • Long-term, medium-term, short-term
  • Prospect, fortune-telling, random
  • Paid, free, mixed
  • Integrate, separate, chaos
  • Assets, liabilities, neither
  • Value, worthless, depending on
  • Social trend, own value, fixed theme
  • Growth, decline, death and rebirth
  • Macro, middle, micro
  • Professional, amateur, student
  • Opening performance, main performance, conclusion
  • Offense, defense, supply
  • Pure, impure, complexity
  • Weekday, holiday, year-round
  • Go with the flow, go against the flow, fixed
  • Mind, technique, body
  • Heart, spirit, soul
  • Ideal, reality, selflessness
  • Saints, villains, ordinary people
  • Heaven, earth, man
  • Substance, information, hybrid
  • Light, darkness, gray
  • Producer, seller, customer

Try making three combinations by yourself. Perhaps you will soon understand you can find more various angles than dualism. They are too concrete to judge our ways of life. If we try to pick up three elements, they naturally become specific.

That is why the dualistic approach suits abstract problems like happiness. On the other hand, trilism is better at applying to more concrete problems, such as business strategy. However, there are so many angles to analyze. That is the disadvantage of trilism.

With those angles, we can analyze many things. That shows us opportunities and how to use our resources well.

Conclusion

That is a trilistic way of thinking.

Trilism is a framework to see things at a strategic level. This is effective when relative factors determine the outcome.

It might provide us with a strategic perspective on how to make our wishes happen.
