Explaining Why Losing Motivation Leads to Creativity: How to Use the Concept of a Swinging Life

In the previous article (this article), I introduced a new concept I named a swinging life. It is a framework for setting goals for people with unique individualities.

Today, I will explain why losing motivation leads to creativity.

How to be more creative

Sometimes, we want to be more creative to accomplish our goals. Creativity gives us many means of possibility. The more opportunities we have, the more hope we have. In other words, creativity gives us hope.

However, we sometimes don’t know how to be creative. This makes us try to be patient and work hard instead of being creative.

If we can proceed, we can tolerate patience. However, if we stagnate, we only endure and are unsatisfied with anything. That is why stagnation is painful, and we want to stay motivated.

In such a case, the following idea would help us: losing our motivation leads to creativity. Today, I will explain why by looking at how to use the concept of a swinging life.

Is losing motivation bad?

Losing our motivation is a process of showing our creativity. Although we usually think losing it is negative, it is necessary to be creative.

Being patient is the opposite of being creative. Losing motivation is negative for being patient, but it works to be creative.

To explain this, let me introduce the concept of a swinging life told in the previous article. This concept will make it easier to understand.

The concept of a swinging life

The concept of a swinging life is that we progress our lives while swaying our contradictory wants.

We have at least two contradictory wants. For example, we might sometimes want to be active but sometimes take a rest. We might sometimes wish for exciting adventures but sometimes a peaceful life. We might sometimes want to contribute to others but sometimes fill ourselves.

We call these contradictory wants mental duality. We have to fill both. Otherwise, we suffer.

In the concept of a swinging life, we assume it is natural that we swing both sides. We need both activity and rest.

This frees us from setting an inappropriate goal that we try to satisfy only one side. By accepting this concept, goals naturally become the direction of independence if we have unique individuality.

The process of swinging states when we show creativity

This concept makes us creative because we don’t have to stick to one specific way that satisfies only one side. In addition, we can understand we can be more creative by losing our motivation.

Let’s look at the process of swinging states when we show creativity. We assume we have duality: a want to be active and rest.

When we find an opportunity, we become active. For example, we might want to write a novel when we come up with a good story idea. This state means we swing our state toward the active side of duality.

However, we sometimes cannot write well, even if we give it our all. That exhausts us and makes us want to rest. In other words, we lose motivation and lean to the resting side of duality.

We don’t have to stick to an active state because we are already at our limit. If we continue to be active, we will only have stagnation.

Changing our states and progressing

New ideas are usually born on the resting side. An active state means changing outside. On the other hand, a resting state is changing our inside.

That often gives us solutions from another level. We might modify what our problem is. We might change the character of the main character instead of trying to make new events. We might shorten the story instead of making a long story. We might find we have a talent for writing psychology rather than fictional stories. We might realize we prefer to talk about it in video rather than in writing.

They are all creative ways. We find many other ways to be independent with more affordable resources. Even if we cannot find any other way, we naturally want to know about the new world or solve our mental repressions.

In other words, we solve more essential problems gradually. That is creativity. Sticking to a superficial thing is not creative.

Living with swinging our states

That is why losing motivation is necessary to be creative. Being on the other side motivates us from another aspect, and we swing our state toward being active again.

This is the process of swinging state when we show creativity. Although we lose motivation, we can be creative and proceed toward independence flexibly.

Losing motivation doesn’t mean letting us lose hope. Stagnation does.

Conclusion

That is why losing our motivation leads to creativity.

Losing motivation doesn’t mean letting us lose hope.

This perspective might allow us to show our creativity.
