My Current Answer to the Question of What Happiness Is

Since I have to go to the dentist today, I will talk about happiness briefly.

How to be happy

Sometimes, we want to be happy, especially when struggling. That makes us want various things, such as money, social status, feelings of love, excitement, mental positivity, skills, and relaxation.

However, we sometimes don’t know the answer. No matter what we pursue, true fulfillment remains out of reach.

That is why we want to know what happiness is.

In my opinion, there may be two forms of happiness for empathic and logical people. Today, I will introduce them. This perspective may help you live by your own will.

Two criteria of happiness

“What is happiness, especially for empathic and logical people?”

My current answer is that there are two criteria of happiness, as follows:

  • From an empathic perspective, happiness is living with faith in future happiness.
  • From a logical perspective, considering happiness is pointless. It is more efficient to engage in activities that are more enjoyable or beneficial.

Making judgments from those two perspectives is happiness, in my current opinion, although it applies only to empathic and logical people.

Empathic happiness

From an empathic perspective, we need to doubt the common idea that happiness is something fun and exciting.

Although we wish joy, it is not made up of just immediate pleasures. Even states of struggling and suffering can lead to happiness later.

After all, living with a moderate amount of stress makes our lives easier. In other words, unbearable stress drives us to wish for happiness. However, some things are inevitable, such as boring into an environment that doesn’t suit us and facing misfortunes.

Despite those unhappy appearances, it should be judged from a long-term perspective. If things ease up at some point in the future, unhappiness will turn into happiness. Don’t confuse the current pain and happiness. Your happiness is not being threatened.

That makes us realize that we cannot say whether we are happy or unhappy until the very last moment. We don’t know even the definition of the ‘last moment.’

People often say, ‘I am happy,’ when eating something delicious or succeeding in business, but those words are all inappropriate and superficial. They are just expressing one aspect of their emotions. It is far from happiness.

Associating happiness with superficial events causes confusion about it.

If we think long-term, it would be more appropriate to say, ‘Happiness is living with faith in future joy.’ Since we cannot know the state of the last moment, it is one form of faith.

That is an empathic answer.

Logical happiness

On the other hand, from a rational perspective, focusing on happiness itself is pointless. It is more efficient to engage in activities that are more enjoyable or beneficial—unless thinking itself is fun.

In other words, stop worrying about problems that have no answer and start something reasonable. That is the logical happiness. It is simple.

Interestingly, making judgments based on those two criteria makes life easier. From an empathic perspective, we can increase our stress resilience. From a logical perspective, we can improve our daily lives. The two cooperate and demonstrate well. It can be called the state of happiness.

Conclusion

That is my current answer to the question of what happiness is.

There may be two forms of happiness for empathic and logical people.

Making judgments from those two perspectives is happiness, in my current opinion.

This perspective may help you live by your own will.
