Living Locally and Creating Only With Things at Hand: Why We Don’t Have to Be So Innovative

It seems I will be busy this week, so the articles will probably become shorter for a week. Let’s talk about my recent creative style today.

What production style will be effective?

Recently, I have been trying to live as locally as possible. In my prediction, it seems better to focus on local connections rather than global ones on the internet.

During a recession, social connections are easily severed. The larger the social connection, the more fragile it is. A typical example is international cooperation. There will be multiple times when trade with other regions can suddenly become impossible.

That is why I am trying to live locally. Sewing bags and trying to create a local business is one part of it.

In this situation, I realized that it is effective to create products only with things at hand. It naturally makes us creative, even if we are not so innovative technologically. Today, I will explain why.

Phenomena that happen during a recession

Living locally aligns well with using only what is available. Even if we don’t bring innovative methods, we can naturally be creative and produce unique work.

When global supply links break, producing similar goods with cheap imported materials becomes more costly and unstable. It is a crucial risk that missing just one material can stop the whole production. That is why large factories are disadvantaged during a recession.

On the other hand, smaller businesses that can adapt to the times become easier to survive. In such times, certain locally abundant materials often become very cheap. For example, in rural areas, export crops may remain unsold. Along the coast, seafood intended for long-distance markets might also be unsold and left over. They often become extremely cheap.

In my area, there are many leftover fabrics. Due to the aging of seamstresses, many of them retired, and fewer people started sewing locally. Retired people want to provide the fabrics, but there is no one willing to take them, even for free. It would be a fascinating environment for someone who wants to start a sewing business.

During a recession, such local phenomena often occur.

Using only what is available

In such situations, using local leftovers rationally and effectively as much as possible makes us creative and innovative. There is no problem even if we create common goods without uniqueness. Since the materials are exceptionally cheap, it makes our work competitive and generates a profit.

In other words, during this period, we have to neither stand out nor create unique items. Since essential goods tend to be scarce, standard quality is sufficient to sell. It is the opposite of today’s internet-driven sales model.

That is why creating local connections becomes advantageous for empathic and logical people like us. We are good at utilizing things at hand. Helping people in need benefits us. In addition, we tend to be quick learners. We can master essences in the short term. On top of that, we don’t have to compete with others. Since connections vary from person to person, we naturally have unique advantages.

In other words, the social confusion period is our time to shine. Focusing on local connections will help us.

Conclusion

That is why it is effective to create products only with things at hand.

During a recession, it naturally makes us creative, even if we don’t bring something innovative.
