Why AI-Generated Images Often Feel Dystopian

In the previous article (this article), I introduced a question about AI. That made me remember its strangeness. Let’s talk about it.

Verbalizing a strange feeling

It is fun to verbalize a strange feeling. An appropriate expression allows us to interpret logically. That calms us.

I experienced it yesterday. I received a question and answered it in the previous article. In that question, some words impressed me: the questioner described the AI-generated images uniquely, “They evoke a sense of dystopia.”

It appropriately described the feeling I often experienced. Although I also felt something was wrong with many AI-generated images, I could not verbalize it for a long time. That description enabled me to understand why I felt discomfort toward some AI-generated images.

The portrayal of perfect happiness evokes a sense of dystopia. They are excessively colorful and high in contrast. On the other hand, nature has something imperfect. Such perfection makes us uncomfortable.

Let’s look at examples today.

The example of excessive colorfulness

For example, look at the following image. It is generated by AI.

It is overly colorful. The sky contains red, blue, green, yellow, and all other hues. That makes it unnatural. It evokes religious paintings. Although it is one form of perfect beauty, it makes us unstable.

Imagine we have to live in such a world. It might be an ideal from one perspective, but it is a dystopia from the perspective of humanity.

We have multiple aspects. Being entirely colorful, clear, and happy means we sacrifice other aspects of ourselves that are negative, unclear, and chaotic. A world that has only happiness is madness.

What is peace?

Look at the picture below. This is also an AI-generated one.

Everyone, beyond races and ages, shakes hands and smiles peacefully. There seems to be no conflict among them at all.

However, try imagining that you have to live in such a village. They are perfectly peaceful. It means they never forgive those who disturb their bonds. Ultimate peace is the same as the elimination of evils. It is easy to expect that it is a suffocating environment for those who have multiple aspects and love freedom.

What is the ‘difference’?

The image below is the same. It may be a beautiful scene of friendships. They are people of diverse races and genders, including even a person with disabilities.

However, it evokes some kind of dystopian feeling due to its high contrast and brightness.

In addition, the environment of everyone having a perfect smile makes us uneasy, like the following image:

For example, when taking a group photo casually, some people strike strange poses to make the people who look at the photograph laugh, some become a bit nervous, and some act freely. There are personalities.

In other words, differences only in appearance unsettle us.

Seeing everyone with the same perfect smile makes us feel a sense of despair. Although they appear differently, there is no diversity in personality.

Are those activities fun?

I often come across images like the following:

People work or study with a big smile. They often make me feel dystopian.

Working and studying are usually tiring. Even if we like it, concentration makes us emotionless. We don’t smile when we enjoy them.

That makes me feel like they are crazy.

Conclusion

Anyway, it is fun to verbalize a strange feeling.

An appropriate description allows us to perceive logically. That calms us.

Recognizing things logically may be more effective in relaxing us than trying to change the world.
