How to Show Our Potential to Customers

Recently, I have explained how to build our own business. In an earlier post (this article), I said that our visions, potential, and passions determine our profits rather than our current skill at the beginning stage. Let’s talk about how to realize them.

How beginners can start a business

Sometimes, we want to build our own business, even as beginners. Making money with our interests makes our lives easier and more energetic. However, we sometimes cannot realize it easily.

One difficult part is creating our initial fans. They love our activities, encourage us, and promote our products to others voluntarily. Their joy makes us happy, even if the sales are still low. They provide us with the pleasure of overcoming the difficulties of a startup business together.

They tend to focus on our potential for the future over our current skill levels. They desire to support creators who have not been recognized yet. Discovering a creator with potential and protecting them are also their pleasures. That is their way of improving their society.

However, we sometimes don’t know how to show our potential, especially at the initial stage of building our business.

One solution is to narrow down the core of your value and create value to an insane degree in that area, even if we disregard profits. That resonates with others who want to support someone. Today, I will explain why.

A strategy for beginners to stand out

Narrow down your core value, focus intensely, and perfect it. In that area, you don’t need to consider profit margin. That will bring your fans to you at the start-up stage of your business.

In other words, create an imbalance intentionally. Although our lives need balance, that doesn’t apply to business, especially at the early stage of building our own business.

One sharp point impresses others and gives them a stronger expectation for the future.

It makes it easier to understand if we compare the following two cases of our products.

Suppose we create two products. One has one excellent place with 10 points, and the rest are far below average, 2 to 3 points. The other is all 6 points.

In the former case of a product with an excellent place, people feel discomfort with that imbalance and pay attention to our work. Although most people don’t like such an imperfect product, those with imagination tend to perceive it differently.

Participating people with imagination in our activities

In their imagination, our products can be 10 points in all aspects. This is because they focus on the excellent point and imagine what would happen if the negative parts were compensated for. That imagination excites them and makes them want to support us.

They think that we can improve our weak points soon. Average creators can take 5 or 6 points in every aspect. It means that scoring an average is not so difficult for usual creators.

However, only logical creators can score 9 to 10 points, even in just one tiny area. Since many creators try to produce balanced products, very few create something that is sharply focused on a single purpose.

In this case, being a beginner can be an advantage. The more we are beginners, the more hope we can give them for the future.

That makes customers with imagination want to support us. They consider us to be young creators with special talents.

On the other hand, if we produce a work without features, we have no choice but to compete with other creators. It is advantageous for creators with longer experience.

In other words, creating works with characteristics is a strategy for beginners to win.

Example of my strategy

That is why it is efficient to narrow down our core value, focus intensely, and perfect it when we try to build a business as a beginner. Since we cannot perfect every aspect, we have to limit where we stand out.

In the case of my sewing, my strengths are functionality and meticulous finishing. At those points, I don’t need to care about profit margin. Rather, I provide overwhelmingly good products in that area compared to the price.

Although I am a beginner in many aspects, such as design, appearance, and the use of materials, I will never compromise on functionality and finishing. My works would appear imbalanced. However, that imbalance, which includes my strengths, makes me stand out among other creators who don’t take on proactive challenges.

That makes customers with imagination want to participate in our activities and support us.

Conclusion

That is a way to show our potential to customers.

We can demonstrate our potential to customers by focusing intensely on our core value and amplifying it, even if we sacrifice short‑term profits.

That kind of commitment resonates with people with imagination who want to support us.
