The Mental State When Expressing Something as an Artist: Why It Frees Us From Perfection

In the previous article (this article), I explained the essence of moving others’ hearts. Let’s look at it more specifically.

How to create works that resonate with others

Sometimes, we want to create works that move people’s hearts.

However, we sometimes don’t know how to make it happen. Even if we imitate a professional’s work, it will not go the same way.

Although something is missing from our work, we don’t know what it is. That makes us pursue one certain form of perfection. It is often something that many people appreciate, rather than reflecting our individualities and circumstances. That makes us start to choose not to fail rather than express something crucial for us.

That is why we want to focus on the essence and be freed from superficial failures.

One approach is to be aware of the mental state when we express ourselves as artists. That may free us from unnecessary worries. Today, I will introduce it with an example.

An example of a singing girl

When we try to convey something crucial, we become less afraid of small mistakes.

To make it easier to understand, let’s look at an example of singing a love song.

Suppose there is a young girl who will ultimately become an artist who sings love songs. Let’s see how the expression looks from her perspective.

She fell in love with someone. Until then, no one had recognized her uniqueness. However, that person was the only one who did. That saved her life.

Her helplessness

Although her heart was saved, she remained powerless. We cannot solve all problems immediately, especially when we are young. She had no money, no status, no trust from others, no talent, and not even any confidence in herself. She didn’t have enough power to make her unrequited love come true.

All she could rely on was a guitar and a love for singing. She thought such hobbies were powerless to solve her problems. Many people looked down on her and said those hobbies were useless. Even she knew that fact well.

She played the guitar and sang alone in a quiet place where she would not bother anyone.

At such a time, she accidentally realized that a child of the same age was secretly listening to her singing. When she asked the child directly, she learned that the child liked her song and lyrics. Since the child had similar circumstances to hers, her song encouraged the child.

She realized that her song and music have power. Expression is a previous state of recognizing the emotions rationally. Even if we are helpless and cannot solve the problem in reality, perceiving feelings appropriately helps us resolve our emotions. That is why we express ourselves. Although she could not verbalize such a physiological system clearly, she realized that singing could save certain people, like the child.

That drove her to make a song and sing for such people. It included herself.

Singing a song for them

To convey her feelings, she sang her love song on the stage at a local autumn festival. In the audience seats, there was the person she had a crush on, who also liked her and supported her musical activities. There was also the child who was a fanatic about her song. She knew that she was helpless. Due to her personality, she didn’t have the courage to confess to that person directly. She cannot help the child’s heart with her poor conversational ability. She understood that she was the awkward person who could only express herself in this way.

Even so, she sang her song for them. That is her way of life. Her song was filled with the passion from her whole heart.

At that moment, she didn’t fear singing out of tune. That was an insignificant matter. She was fully aware of her inferiority. She didn’t wish to be recognized by many people. The crucial thing for her was whether she would try to convey it or not.

When we try to convey something to others, we will not be self-centered. The more we try to express ourselves appropriately, the more we manage to maintain balance. In other words, it naturally forms a rational shape.

That moves the hearts of others who have experienced similar situations. Even if her song is imperfect and out of tune, her attitude is integrated. It has the power to resonate with others’ hearts.

That is the state of singing love. It differs from just singing a love song well on a big stage. When our attitudes and intentions are integrated into the work, its expression changes fundamentally.

Conclusion

That is the mental state when we express ourselves as artists.

In this state, we don’t fear technical failures. That is a superficial matter. The crucial thing for us is whether we try to express and convey it or not.

That may show us the essence and enable us to create something that moves others’ hearts.
