I recently started sewing as a hobby. At first, I was not very interested in it. However, it gradually became enjoyable. This is because I have discovered new elements of fun in sewing. Let’s talk about one of my recent examples.
How to discover a new joy
Sometimes, we desire fun activities. They make us excited and happy.
However, we sometimes cannot discover them, even if we try many activities.
One solution would be to associate your new activities with another desire you have long held. Today, I will explain it with a recent experience. This might help you find new fun.
The desire I have long held
Try linking your new activities to another desire you held for a long time. That could help you enjoy things in a new way.
To make it easier to understand, let’s look at my recent experience.
I liked imagining the location and floor plan of my ideal house, in which I could live as comfortably, compactly, and cost-efficiently as possible. For that, I needed to identify what kind of life I wanted to live, how to spend the day in that house, and what kind of floor layout was necessary.
Such planning entertained me. However, that was not something I could achieve easily. Although I knew that some people built tiny houses on their own at a low cost, I was not such a daring person. I am sensitive to risks and not suited for tough physical work due to my weak liver.
Discovering the essence of my desire
Unexpectedly, I recently realized that sewing bags fulfills that desire.
We can assume that bags are miniature versions of houses. A bag has partitions and can be divided into multiple compartments. We can say that they are rooms in the house. We put our belongings in it and organize them well. Each bag has an individual functionality based on its purpose. A bag is like a home in terms of organization.
That made bag-making exciting for me. I can plan the ideal bag according to the situation.
For example, if we want to spend the next half day concentrated on work, where is the ideal place to do that, what items do you carry, and what kind of bag would be suited? If we want to spend time on the quiet beach peacefully, what sort of bag and items, including food and drinks, are ideal to bring? How do we organize them? Considering such ideal lifestyles entertained me.
In other words, I realized the essence of my desire. I loved organizing based on various situations. If I can do it, I don’t have to build multiple houses.
Making bags is far easier than building houses. That is why making bags motivated me.
From another perspective, I associated my desire, which I held for a long time, with sewing. That made my sewing activity more enjoyable.
